amy's new place of employment, marathon physical therapy, took everyone from their three clinics out last night for drinks and food at jillians and then to the red sox game. a lot of fun until the heavens opened and the rain came down. funny thing about the game too, benjie molina, formerly of the Giants, had a huge night...here's an interesting take on it (check out the third paragraph down).
board
sojourn's board of directors was in town today and we had a chance to eat dinner together which was great. somebody mentioned to me that they had "board envy" because the people on our team are so great...and they are, indeed, pretty great!

in our last house i did not have a desk. didn't seem like such a big deal at first, but it is pretty great to have space so i can be all organized and stuff. and we have so much space in this place it is a little ridiculous...too many shelves!
baseball
as much as i love baseball i have a hard time getting in to the all-star game. so, fantasy update: my winner's league team is up by four after a recent surge to first! my other team, in the league with my sbux friend ramon, is in third but way off the pace...at least i'm beating ramon! big props to josh hamilton, magglio ordonez, joe mauer, buster posey, martin prado, ryan zimmerman, cliff lee, jon lester, clay buchholz, brian wilson, and matt lindstrom for great first halves!

we made some tremendous progress today and are nearly settled in to our new house. here's a 360 view of the living room.

birthday
amy's birthday today! i love getting to celebrate my amazing wife!!! ryan and i put her desk together for her, i made breakfast, and then i also gave her a day where we had nothing else to do but get our house all put together and finally settle in to our new digs...that day will be tomorrow.

took students to maine today to enjoy the beach. of course, it ended up raining...which we turned in to fun time exploring the little beach town (closest thing to santa cruz we have in our area). we played some games, ate ice cream, and connected with new friends.
weird story of the day: we had to rent a car because of the jeep issues (see yesterday's post), and i ended up leaving my phone in the car when we dropped it off. luckily i realized this before we got home, so we trekked back to rental office, found the car, looked inside and found nothing. amy decided to call my phone, though, and someone actually answered! one of the cleaners had picked it up and was hoping the owner would call. he told us to meet him on the other side of the rental area and when we got over there i immediately recognized him as the night janitor from the nathan hale, the school i worked at last year. what a strange, small world. we had a good time reconnecting and i got my phone back!

the jeeps is actually fine but its fan won't stop turning (cooling fan). so, to the shop we go...ugh!!!!!!!!!!

nathan took us flying and it was awesome! check out the pics...

rocked trivia tonight at a new venue: the squealing pig. did not win but had a great time and we busted out the lantern t-shirts.

the great ryan mcrae is in town and he came with a mission: eat at the barking crab. mission accomplished!
preaching
had the opportunity and privilege to speak at Reunion, our church, today. i had fun and i think it went well. didn't get a picture in action because its kind of weird to be photographed by your wife when you are speaking but a friend and artist make this drawing while i was talking. cool!
also, several new reasons to love our neighborhood: hanging out in the backyard and meeting neighbors, free basil from the community garden, and seeing the fireworks show from piers park without being surrounded by a million people.

today the movie what's your number was being shot down the block from my store at cafe vanille, site of several sojourn related meetings. pretty cool even if the movie doesn't seem to be super high quality.
also, tonight on abc, boston med premiered...the show follows doctors at three local hospitals one of which, mass general, is a block from our store in the other direction...lots of folks who work there get their coffee from us. it'll be interesting to see if any customers appear on the show!

i spent most of the morning pulling my hair and swearing under my breath and then in one last minute of brilliance it all came out in a screaming run around the the house. what a game.

when i turned 20 i had a bit of a meltdown. it's become a legendary event in family lore. something about not being a teenager and all the life stuff that is supposed to happen in your twenties got to me.
but turning 30 has been pretty uneventful. in fact, i am pretty excited about it. maybe it's because it means i am closer to my old man fantasy becoming a reality. more importantly, i feel like i have officially passed the "getting ready for something important" phase and am now into the "this is my life's work" phase and that is pretty exciting.
i am totally stoked for my thirties!

today was full of a lot of good things and this i certainly not on the top of the list, especially in light of the conditions people live in around the world, but today was probably the last day we will go to the laundromat for a long time and that is a glorious thing!

sojourn field trip to pawtucket, rhode island to watch some AAA baseball. good times!
busy
life is a little hectic right now...today was so full that i had to go grocery shopping at 7:45 am. lot's to do in the next week before we take off for maine.
also, there was a soccer game today =) tons of words will spent on the referee, and i suppose it is warranted...hope it doesn't overshadow the awesomeness of coming back from a 2-0 deficit. pretty amazing.
honors
the apta conference is in boston right now and amy was honored tonight with other PT's and students who have been awesome this year. so proud of her and all she has accomplished during her time at BU!
letters
once again, time to send out reports to supporters. got some good news about our financial situation this week: we've carried a significant surplus over the course of the year, which puts us in a good place heading in to the coming year and gives me a lot of confidence for our next fundraising push!

Akron_pt_2
arguably the best part of our time in akron was spent by the "pond." the pond is a hidden jewel owned by jenna's family and it is a wonderful, peaceful oasis! we ate some amazing food and relaxed in this beautiful spot after a long drive and a busy morning. what a gift!

amy and i took a quick trip to Akron, NY this weekend to speak at a supporting church (first baptist Akron...this was our first chance to meet these generous folks) and to take our friend Jenna home. we were super blessed with all the encouragement and generosity showed towards us. we leave refreshed and energized knowing that these people are behind us praying us on!
world_cup
for me, nothing beats the world cup...except when the giants are in the playoffs. but i actually think this event is better than the olympics, march madness, or whatever other sporting event one might throw into the mix. interestingly, the world cup always occurs in the middle of some large life transition: '94, finished jr high and headed off to high school...'98, graduated high school headed off to college (actually watched part of this WC on a huge tv in a dorm during my orientation weekend instead of going to a party)...'02, graduated college headed off to grad school...'06, move to Colorado...'10, turn 30. it'll be interesting to see what's on the table in '14, not too many of these "natural" life transitions left.
